INTRODUCTION

Moped are Europe’s greatest ever living (or dead) band. Hailing from Battenberg, Germany they have sold quite literally dozens of records over a career which has spanned ten years and three employment training schemes.

But who are the guys behind this band, yes? What is the skill behind their keyboards and sample devices, here we begin to find out by going back to the start of the beginning.

THE BEGINNING

Back in the year of 1993, Alexi Weissthong was rapping in the famous hot clubs of Battenberg, Germany; ‘Sexy Dance’, ‘Cake’, and ‘Das Grove’. Rapping to the beats of all those super hot DJs from back in the day, two guys in the Cake nightclub saw Alexi and approached him with trepidation. They were scared his big rhymes would blow them away, but the MC was fresh to the flavour. The guys were Stelios and Vincenzo two keyboarding ace people with big ideas for a dance group which would be eliminating all the other groups away, far, far away. It was then that they all agreed to join all together and be together as one in the music, with each other.

But how did the guys get their great name MOPED?. Alexis was still living with his hard working house mother, living in his tiny box room on his own. He sat for many long hours in front of his beat box making up rhyme after rhyme after beautiful rhyme. On one occasion he was interrupted by his mother who requested him to go out to the supermarket, to buy her a new head for her mop. So that he did not forget what it was he was going for, she repeated the words Mop Head, Mop Head Mop Head, over and over and over again. During his travels it happened; MopHead….Moped. The name had finally been born into being. Also it had been suggested at an earlier rehearsal by the other band members.

While many MCs use their own names to bust their super fresh rhymes Alexi decided he would use not one name, not his own name, but the first initial of the five names of his pet weasels; Ludvig, Max, Nikolas, Olaaf and Pete. MC L.M.N.O.P was born. Yes. Thank you.

Vincenzo Lanzarote awoke from a powerful dream, it was this dream that would be changing his life, or more specifically his name. He dreamt he was an inner city vicar using ground breaking top, scratching beats to convert the people of Europe to the Moped sound, and God. The Vicar was born.

DJ Stelios is called DJ Stelios because his name is Stelios. And he is a DJ.

The guys recorded their first CD ‘When Das Boot Comes In’ on very little marks yet still managed to notch up some super hot hits in Bulgaria, and had big hits in the Moldavia ‘Hot 42’ chart.

The group would release smash after hit after hit after smash, though some radio stations choose not to play their charity single ‘Alsatian Love’ ‘I know not why’ says The Vicar ‘it is simply portraying the beautiful love between a boy and his alsatian, Boris.’

1997 saw the Moped guys begin a mammoth 364 day tour of Scandinavia and outlying coastal regions to promote their ‘Moped Party’ double super hot CD. Long days of medium quality coach travel and nights of big Moped action however begin to take their toll and DJ Stelios was admitted to the Marabou General Hospital for addiction to the new chemical made up dance drug ‘asscrack’. ‘It was sehr, sehr bad, I would be up all night partying hard on the asscrack’ he recalls ‘My beats ended up whack, without the freshness, it was a bad week of my life’ .

1999 saw the group enter a difficult phase, the guys were only talking through their solicitors. It all stemmed back to a newspaper article that claimed that The Vicar was caught being over friendly with a piece of his musical equipment. The case was dismissed but the name 'Technology Intacourse' was born and still the hits kept on arriving.

2001 brought the comeback album ‘Bush Selecta’ into being, famous for its 45 minute skiffleboard solo on the happy-ragga-thrash-beatcore track ‘Wicked Supa Beatz’. In an interview with Finland’s “Beat..Bop..Ja” magazine DJ Stelios said about the track’. It was crazy. I did it for a bet. I lost’.

In 2003 after a decade of hot hits in Europe, Moped had the United Kingdom shouting ‘More Tea Vicar’. UK supergroup Coldplay had decided to cover ‘Moped’s track ‘Clokchs’ from the new Moped album 'Techno for an Answer' and they did it in a rock and roll style, those crazy English people! UK DJs immediately searched for the original and were not disappointed with what they were finding. The first UK radio jockey to track down Moped’s original was Chris 'The Chris' Moyles of BCB’s ‘Radio 1’ station. Soon after other UK DJs could not help but give into the Moped sound. The response was major phenomenal. Moped  were finally big famous in the UK at last. Now appearing across the UK, Moped intend to insert a small piece of themselves into the whole of the British people.
